The Long Now Foundation

I’ve always been impressed by people who take the long view – they don’t expect results immediately, or even in their lifetimes. They just start the ball rolling, and let time take its course.

The Long Now Foundation

In designing something like an Internet index, it’s a good idea to take the long view. What is the lifetime of the Internet? How long can you expect your software to be relevant? Will it evolve with the system? Where will it be in a thousand years?

Those who write open source software might expect that their work will be built on by others, and could persist for untold lengths of time in some form or other.

Open source software is meant to be built upon. That means it can develop and evolve and grow over many, many years and generations. Isn’t that the real potential of open source?
